He was living out of his van, traveling the country, digging for records, and working any gig he could find. With an SP-404, an analog tape machine, and a portable turntable, he crafted 2 beat tapes which eventually led to a watershed collaboration with Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson.
The resulting album, 'Actus Reus' showcased a hungry producer who could blend groove, mood, and narrative to create a powerful sonic palette for Simpson. The project was arranged on the road, with mastering and studio time funded by cash from odd jobs.
As a multi-instrumentalist, record collector, and hip-hop head, Dixon Hill used any and all tools at his disposal to become one of the most promising producers in the world of underground hip-hop. The result is a fresh blend of familiar old school boom bap with an updated twist, channeling his heroes Prince Paul, Pete Rock, Large Professor, and DJ Premier.
